The X record

Updated · reviewed by a human

What X's own Help Center, Terms of Service, developer policy and Community Notes guide say about AI-generated media, impersonation, bots, and the checkmark.

How does X handle AI-generated content?

None of X's own pages reviewed here ask creators to self-label AI-generated posts. Instead, AI falls under X's synthetic and manipulated media rule. The X Rules say you may not deceptively share synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm.

The fuller Authenticity policy, dated April 2025, says the rule covers media depicting a real person that has been fabricated or simulated, including through artificial intelligence.

Sharing that kind of media in non-deceptive ways is allowed, and X says it may not act when it can't reliably tell whether media is misleading. The X Rules say X may label posts that contain synthetic or manipulated media.

The other public correction tool is Community Notes: a note tagged as being about an image or video shows on every post X's system matches to the same media. X's rules also ban fake personas built with AI-generated profile photos.

Its non-consensual nudity policy, rewritten in August 2026, bans creating, editing or sharing sexual content of an identifiable real adult without consent, names AI-generated and deepfake media, and counts even prompting an AI for such content as a violation.

Consensual adult content is allowed, AI-generated included, only when it's labeled. A blue checkmark means a paid Premium subscription that meets X's eligibility rules, and X's own page says it does not mean the account has been ID verified.

Quick answers

Does X label AI-generated posts?

Not by default. None of X's own pages reviewed here ask creators to self-label AI content. X's rules ban deceptively sharing synthetic or manipulated media that is likely to cause harm, including fabricated or simulated depictions of real people. The X Rules say X may label such posts, and Community Notes can attach context to an image or video wherever it is re-shared. X also says it may not act when it can't reliably tell whether media is misleading.

Is AI-generated nude imagery of a real person allowed on X?

No. X's non-consensual nudity policy, rewritten in August 2026, bans sharing, creating or manipulating content that sexualizes or exposes an identifiable real adult without their explicit consent, and lists AI-generated and deepfake media among its examples. Prompting or trying to generate such content of a real person with AI also violates it, even if the attempt fails. X says it may suspend the account that first posted such media. Consensual adult content, AI-generated included, is allowed only when it is marked as adult content.

Does a blue checkmark on X mean the account is a real, verified person?

No. X's own page says the blue checkmark means an active X Premium subscription plus eligibility requirements, and that it does not mean the account has been ID verified. After a European Commission decision, X stopped calling blue-checkmark users "verified" in the EEA; X is appealing that decision. Gold and grey checkmarks mark organizations and government accounts.

Can an account on X be run by a bot or AI?

X permits automated accounts within its automation rules. X's Developer Policy says bot operators must make clear what the account is and who is responsible for it. X's automated-account label, described as in testing, links a bot to the human-run account that manages it. Fake personas built to deceive, including with AI-generated profile photos, are banned under X's Authenticity policy.

How can misleading AI images be corrected on X?

Through Community Notes. Contributors write notes, and a note shows only when enough raters from different points of view find it helpful. A note tagged as being about an image or video appears on every post X's system matches to the same media. X says its teams cannot edit notes and that notes do not represent X's viewpoint.
